Oral Care and Hygiene Training Course for Carers

I have been working for the improvement of oral health of individuals (children and adults) and groups in society who have a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability or, more often, a combination of a number of these factors, for over 20 years, and within Cornwall since 2001.

I have been asked by several care managers to provide training to carers in oral hygiene practice and general oral care for all types of residents, including those where co-operation for oral care has become challenging.

In order to comply with CQC requirements and to meet the NICE recommendations I have also been asked to provide oral care needs assessment documents, personalised oral care plans and paperwork, and training for staff on how to complete these.

I am able to offer all this information, and more about specific oral needs for other medical, physical and intellectual impairments, on an independent basis, as unfortunately the NHS does not commission such services and training.

The training session will raise awareness of the importance of daily mouth care as well as practical advice for those people that are dependent or need assistance in oral care techniques.

It will provide carers with the knowledge and ability to plan and deliver daily mouth care within care homes.

My training is bespoke to each care providers’ requirements.

On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

-Have a better understanding of how to assist residents with basic daily oral hygiene procedures and denture care

-Outline the potential effects of poor oral health on an individual's general health and well-being

-Have a better understanding of the mouth to include dental disease and recognise abnormalities

-Recognise the need for specialised mouth care and supporting people who require assistance

-If appropriate; Coping strategies for residents with challenging behaviour towards mouth care

-If appropriate; Provide Daily Mouth Care for dependent and medically compromised residents

Dysphagia

Dementia

Nil by mouth

Palliative care

The session is interactive and runs for two hours.

A maximum of 12 participants allows for a full participation and supportive environment for learning.

My charge for the session is £174.
